INTEGRA – Identification and intervention on children at risk of language disorders and / or neuro-development, children of migrants
Why the project?
Italy is particularly involved in the migratory phenomes. For several years now, we have moved from the period of migrations to seek work and family to that characterized by new migration flows to seek and to enjoy political asylum and international protection. Specifically, for children with migrant origin with neurodevelopment disorders (e.g. with communication and/or language disorders) local services supply services able to recover and/or to strengthen personal abilities.
Therefore is evident the need for awareness and information raising project addressed the foreigners parents and also the need of health and social services able to implement diagnostic and rehabilitation path to children with disability in the neuro-psychological area, in particular communicative and language disability.
The scientific literature has now shown that communicative-relational and linguistic skills are indicators considered crucial for assessing the level of neuropsychological and psychosocial well-being of the preschooler and that a delayed or atypical linguistic development may be the indicator of a disorder of language or hide complex clinical problems such as intellectual disabilities, autism spectrum disorders or mild deafness not previously diagnosed.
The INTEGRA project proposes the creation of a communication and language screening program for children aged 24-42 months, children of migrants of different nationalities.
Project duration 24 months
Scientific responsible of the project: Carlo Calzone – Director of child’s neuropsychiatry P.O. Matera
The project is realized with the funding of the National Institute for Health, Migration and Poverty (NIHMP)
